Just when your favorite artist thought it was ok to come back out Rihanna comes from out of nowhere and shuts it down yet again. Rihanna set history once again as she covers 7 different special editions for Complex Magazine. The seven different covers pay’s homage to each of her seven album covers that she has had throughout her successful career. The bajan singer sat down to talk about a variety of topics from her image portrayal from the media, her fanbase that we all know as Rihanna Navy, her controversial instagram pics and Chris Brown amongst other things. Check out more pics as well as excerpts from her cover story below.
On the public’s perception of her because of the media:
“People take the little bit of information they’re fed, and they draw a picture of who you are,” she says. “Most of the time it’s wrong.”
On posting pictures of herself on Instagram:
“It’s narcissistic, but whatever—everyone does it,” she says. “I’m capturing personality… Everybody has their thing they like or don’t like to see. It’s all in your head. That’s why people take their own pictures, because it’s difficult for someone else to capture what you seek.”
On her Navy being shady:
“We don’t start the trouble, but that’s how we’re defending ourselves—by saying some slick shit. That’s how I’ve always been. I was so rude when I was a little girl. I got my ass beat by my mother for that. Most of the time it was because of my mouth.”
On recording Unapologetic:
“I held back before. I didn’t show a lot of myself. I was very guarded,” she says. “I needed to be open and free and fearless. Basically say, ‘Fuck it.’ What’s the worst that can happen? They’ll hate me? They’ve done that before.”
Ty-Ty on Chris Brown being on the Birthday Cake remix:
“We don’t focus on the media, so it was never a question,” he says. “It’s all about the music. Everything else doesn’t even play a part in the studio.” He insists that the record wasn’t made with Brown in mind. “The-Dream didn’t write it for them as a duet. Jay-Z and I were in the car together listening to the song, and we thought it would be a great duet. It sounds dope. It feels good. That’s how Chris ended up on the song.”
