CD Review: The Wanted Word of Mouth | Tangible Sounds | Not ...

The Wanted

Word of Mouth

4/5

Listen To: Everybody Knows

Skip It: None

The Wanted, one of my favourite British boy bands have done it again; they never cease to delight me. Their latest album Word of Mouth was a charming mixture of dance, R&B, and pop songs.

Every woman secretly craves the sweet promises and compliments in a boy band song and The Wanted didn’t disappoint. Ladies, they give us what we want to hear with lyrics such as I love the way we fight and stay up all night and the way you look in the morning light in “The Middle.” When I see you dancing, gets me so excited… in “Drunk on Love,” You just say the words and I’ll be wrong as long as we’re alright in “We’re Alright,” I was lost till I found you in “I Found You” and Everybody knows that I’m just a bum without you by my side in “Everybody Knows.”

Their songs are mainly about love and broken hearts. They value a woman’s love more than anything. Their lyrics are sincere and unpretentious as opposed to being about their fame, fortune and big egos. “Everybody Knows” is a slow, sweet confession that declares that fame doesn’t matter if the woman you love doesn’t care about you. With lyrics like I’m popular for reasons that I hate it’s evident that fame doesn’t compare to true love. I wish more male singers would sing about this rather than how many women they can tally up with their fame and fortune. In “We’re Alright,” The Wanted croon I’m no good if your heart breaks so I’ll do whatever it takes and humbly agree to be wrong if that will end the fight, proving that love is more important than wining the argument.

Each song has something new to offer. The Wanted’s lyrics are carefully written with thought provoking themes and well constructed rhymes. They challenge themselves to try different instruments, sounds, and pace in each song proving they are not a One Trick Pony.

With a broader musical palette and a more mature vibe than their British contemporaries, the boys of One Direction, The Wanted doesn’t just present us with all the things we love about a boy band. They push the limit and dabble in other genres too. They go for a little passionate rock balladry in “Love Sewn” and mimic Daft-Punk in the upbeat and catchy “Glow in the Dark.” Not to mention their club-ready songs like “Walks Like Rihanna” and “I Found You” make you want to get up and dance!

The Wanted cater to all their fans and have found their place in the hearts of teenage fan girls and the women who are still fan girls at heart. These talented British boys are more than just a boy band and should be compared to successful bands such as Maroon 5 rather than teen bands. They know what fan girls want to hear and what women need to hear.

Clearly The Wanted have much more to offer to the music world than just their amazing single “Glad You Came” and this album is packed with reasons to love them even more. It left me feeling happy, excited and put me in a dancing mood. I recommend the whole album as a wonderful addiction to your IPod’s playlist.
