I learned something last night and that was that Anne Hathaway hosted Saturday Night Live 3 times since she first did back in 2008. Hathaway has always struck me as a team player. Probably coming to a head when she had to carry James Franco as he slept his way through the pair’s Oscar hosting duties a few years back.
But Hathaway is a great mix of fun and easygoing as she also seems to seriously care about doing a good job while at the wheel of SNL. Because of all of this, I enjoyed last night’s SNL as I’d much rather watch someone be present and go “for it” rather than fumble their way through the night. Hathaway brought a high level of energy to the night so we had an episode that flew by with dancing and singing numbers and a pinch of being vomited on by a baby for good measure.
Cold Opening: Mitt Romney On a Balcony
This is probably our goodbye to the Mitt Romney and could be the foreshadowing of Jason Sudeikis’ departure which, if we had to guess would be in the new year based on all the chatter that’s been floating around since last summer. I’ve enjoyed Sudeikis’ (in this case literally) milk-toast turn as Mittens but Taran Killam getting to play the second fiddle as the Romney children highlighted this sketch.
Anne Hathaway Monologue: Le Miz
Here comes the plugging for Anne’s forthcoming movie which is about miserable people.
Girlfriends Talk Show
Hey! Noobz Aidy Bryant and Cecily Strong got themselves the first sketch of the night. Good for them. And good for turning a funny sketch with some old school girl jealousy.
Mokiki
Wow is this an odd sketch. But really incredibly hilarious in it’s weirdness. It also involves baby vomit and no one can go wrong with baby vomit. SNL’s digital shorts are pretty solid so far this season, between this and “Lincoln” last week, they haven’t missed many steps post Andy Samberg. I also believe there isn’t much Taran Killam can’t do. Let’s all sloppy swish people.
Homeland
At the end of the night Hathaway apologized/thanked Clarie Danes for being a good sport for her turns as Homeland’s Carrie. This walked the line of spoof and hit the tone of the show done to the jazz freakout to Dana’s wandering. There’s nothing to apologize for.
McDonald’s Firing
Here’s our entire cast sketch of the night, they even rolled out Tim Robinson for this one, who after coming out big at the beginning of the season, has been pretty quiet the last few weeks. Cecily Strong has really come into her own the last few weeks. I also once again reaffirm my love for Bobby Moynihan and his ability to make what should be an obnoxious character and making me like him.
Rihanna “Diamonds”
Can we talk about this? Can we just have a frank discussion about what happens when green screen goes horribly wrong? Wow! Oh and I see Nuno Bettencourt is still slinging the ol’ axe for RiRi these days.
Weekend Update
Weekend Update was pretty solid this week. Delivering three solid guest turns with Jay Pharoah showing up as Obama who has to make an appearance post election, though I expected that to happen during the cold open. Gay couple from Maine dropped in to discuss the new vote to make gay marriage legal in Maine and Drunk Uncle!! Who might have saved the entire update with his election commentary – red state, blue state, red state, blue state. What’s a Jewspaper? The funniest line of the night, that’s what it was.
Ellen
This sketch never made it to the web but it involved Kate McKinnon doing a pretty mean Ellen Degeneres impression as Keenan Thompson DJ’d his soul away.
American Gothic
Ever wonder how some classic paintings came to be? Here’s your chance to find out.
Rihanna “Stay”
RiRi is back. Someone musta told her that the green screen was a bad idea the first tiem around because she dropped it for the second performance.
New Claritin
Our final sketch of the night totally mocks those claiming to have some made up allergies. Let’s stick it to ‘em all eh?
And that’s a wrap people. Hathaway pulled off a fun night of sketches, enthusiasm and greatness. Big winners of the night definitely are Jason Sudeikis, Cecily Strong, Keenan Thompson, Taran Killam and Bobby Moynihan while the normally rock-like Bill Hader took a bit of a break this time around.
Next week Jeremy Renner and Maroon 5 will hold court up in 30 Rock. It’s the last live show of November and we’ll have to see just how many jokes about turkey can be made in order to meet the turkey-in-comedies quota.
