Rihanna has unveiled the visuals for ‘Diamonds,’ the lead single from her upcoming album Unapologetic. The emotive track opens with Rihanna donning a Skrillex-esque haircut and drizzling diamonds into a cigarette and smoking it. Black-and-white scenes of the singer are sandwiched between some eclectic environments, as she appears with two majestic horses in the desert, floating harmoniously in the ocean, and in a post-apocalyptic environment with a flurry of flames and vigilantes.
The video was directed by Anthony Mandler, and the two have collaborated on Rihanna’s previous videos including ‘Hate That I Love You,’ ‘Disturbia,’ and ‘Only Girl (In the World).’ Speaking on the video’s sporadic nature, Rihanna said that “With ‘Diamonds,’ it was just a series of vignettes that we put together to help get the emotion across throughout the song ’cause the song changes and it builds, and there’s no real way that you could do that… You just want people to feel that and I wanted little cutaways of interactions that would give you the right emotion.” Watch the video below.
